Boost eLearning's Google Search Experience Survey Results

The primary benefit of Boost eLearning's Google Search Training is to enhance the productivity of enterprises by increasing the skills of their employees searching on Google. In order to establish foundational data to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of Google Search, Boost eLearning hosted the "Your Google Search Experience" survey on the Boost eLearning website from August 15, 2008 thru September 8, 2008. The following is a summary of the key survey findings based on 377 responses confirming the need of our training:

When asked "how important is Google to doing your job?" The results were:

Survey of time and effectiveness for searching using Google

(survey data* courtesy of Boost eLearning)
*online survey conducted Summer 2008, results reflect weighted
averages based on 230 work days per year

Not Important: 7%
Somewhat Important: 32%
Very Important: 37%
Essential: 24%

Survey Results:

Average number of searches per day: 12
Average number of minutes searching a day: 31
Average number of minutes per search: 2.5
Average number of failed searches per day: 4.7
% of Searches that did not obtain desired results: 39%
Number of minutes daily on unsuccessful searches: 12.12
Number of hours on failed searches per year: 46.5

The results show a significant loss in productivity due to lack of technical proficiency in searching Google. In addition to lost productivity, a high search-failure rate also indicates that a user's current research results are likely incomplete, leading to missed opportunities, the value of which could far exceed any time lost.

The survey confirms real-world Google users are only finding the information they need about 60 percent of the time. With this in mind, it's critical that learning professionals understand how they can help employees increase their productivity and search accuracy by leveraging the full functionality of Google. Boost eLearning's Google Search Training is designed to develop the skills to empower users to take advantage of the full functionality of Google Search.

More than 233 million Google searches are conducted a day in the U.S., making the Google search engine one of the most powerful and ubiquitous resources available to information workers today. While Google is designed to provide users with accurate results quickly, only a fraction of todays Internet-powered employees fully utilize its built-in functionality.

To help users take full advantage of Google, Boost eLearning has developed a single course of 20 online lessons that quickly and easily instill in workers the expanded range of search skills they need to dramatically increase the effectiveness of their queries. Based on proven adult learning principles, Boost eLearning's Google Search Training empowers users to become proficient in a wide array of search practices, including queries they did not know were possible.
