Course Content

Boost eLearning's Google Search Training is structured as one course comprised of 20 lessons. Each lesson is approximately five to fifteen minutes in length. The training is designed to develop skills that will result in significant time savings and dramatically more relevant searches on Google.

A quick review of the 20 lessons and 82 separate skills provides some perspective on the breath, depth, and benefit of Boost eLearning's Google Search Training. Upon completion of the course you will save time, improve search results, and eliminate the frustration associated with unsuccessful searches.

This course can be taken by anyone. We have designed the course for those simply surfing the web to those taking an exacting deep dive. We recognize that the majority of time you search the web there is value to the information you are seeking to obtain. We know that knowledge is power. We want our trainees to have the ability to access that knowledge and gain that power efficiently and effectively.

The following is a brief Overview of Boost eLearning's Google Search Training Course. Upon completion of each lesson you will have the skills to confidently perform the objectives of the lesson:


Free Trial AvailableLesson # 1 Phrase Search will develop the skills to: (12 MIN)

  1. Designate a set of words as a phrase
  2. Find words in the order you want them
  3. Always have names appear with first and last name together
  4. Search for compound words

Lesson # 2 Advanced Operator—OR will develop the skills to: (8 MIN)

  1. Look for two words that indicate the same idea without running your search twice
  2. Search for synonyms or analogous terms
  3. Use alternate spellings of your term
  4. Combine alternate terms within a phrase

Lesson # 3 Advanced Operator—NOT will develop the skills to: (8 MIN)

  1. Exclude terms
  2. Get rid of unwanted words that clutter up your search results
  3. Eliminate many advertisements from your search results
  4. Find company specific contact information for sales leads

Lesson # 4 Advanced Operator—Synonym-Finder will develop the skills to: (7 MIN)

  1. Have Google come up with highly relevant additional search terms, and look for them without you having to type them all into the search box.
  2. Use the power and convenience of Google's automated synonym search
  3. Ask Google to select synonyms on your behalf

Lesson # 5 Advanced Operator—Wildcard will develop the skills to: (10 MIN)

  1. Free Trial AvailableFind an unknown word or statistic as a part of a search
  2. Save time by seeing more information in the results Google displays
  3. Leave one or more blanks inside a phrase, and let Google fill them in for you, adding elasticity and reach to your search
  4. Find company specific contact information for sales leads
  5. Use multiple wildcards together to expand the number of words appearing in the "blank"

Lesson # 6 Advanced Operator—Number Range will develop the skills to: (15 MIN)

  1. Use Number Range to find a number when you do not know its value
  2. Use Number Range to specify highest and lowest acceptable numbers for a search, and what variations Google will allow
  3. Use the Number Range Search to emphasize the number for which you are searching.
  4. Use Number Range Search to do a greater than or equal to search
  5. Use Number Range Search when you have a minimum number, and want to find anything greater
  6. Use Number Range Search when you need to search for prices, or other number with decimals
  7. Use Number Range Search to search for a price somewhere within a range
  8. Use Number Range Search to combine number range and other search terms to assure that a particular word or phrase immediately precedes or follows the number you need

Lesson # 7 Advanced Operator—Plus will develop the skills to: (5 MIN)

  1. Use Plus to stop Google from looking for multiple forms of the word you are searching
  2. Use Plus to avoid Google from generating results with the plural form of your Search Term

Lesson # 8 Special Information Need—Definition will develop the skills to: (9 MIN)

  1. Use Definition to obtain multiple definitions of a word
  2. Use Definition to obtain definitions from multiple dictionaries, and returns English-language definitions with links to explanations in other languages, when available
  3. Use Definitions when you want definitions with a little more context—something more along the lines of an encyclopedia entry
  4. Use Definitions to obtain an image of the thing you do not know

Lesson # 9 Query Modifiers—Site will develop the skills to: (10 MIN)

  1. Use Site when you know exactly where you want to search fro example just .org sites, or just within wikipedia.com
  2. Use Site when you want to limit you research to a specific domain, site, or page
  3. Use Site to search only those pages contained in one particular site
  4. Use Site to limit your search to just academic institutions, or just sites from a particular country

Lesson # 10 Advanced Operator—Filetype will develop the skills to: (9 MIN)

  1. Free Trial AvailableUse Filetype to deliver information you want, in the format you need.
  2. Use Filetype to search documents in PDF, PostScript, or any Microsoft Office format, plus many others
  3. Use Filetype to search for newer file types such as rss, ged, mp3, php, and jpg
  4. Use Filetype to view a file as a link in a different format if you have not installed an application on your computer

Lesson # 11 Alternate Query Type—Cache will develop the skills to: (8 MIN)

  1. Use Cache to view prior versions of a website
  2. Use Cache as an alternate source when a page you want is not working properly
  3. Use Cache when you receive an error code such as "404 File Not Found error message"
  4. Use Cache when you want to see a prior version of a constantly changing Website such as the homepage of MSN

Lesson # 12 Query Modifier—Inurl will develop the skills to: (7 MIN)

  1. Use Inurl to search for a specific term in the URL of a page
  2. Use Inurl to search for multiple terms within the URL of a page

Lesson # 13 Query Modifier—Intitle will develop the skills to: (8 MIN)

  1. Use Intitle to find search specific search terms in page titles-assuring that your pages are really about the information you need
  2. Use Intitle to specify the type of resource - for example, a database or a list - and not just the content
  3. Use Intitle to save time and require all you search terms appear in the title of the pages Google brings back

Lesson #14 Query Modifier—Intext will develop the skills to: (6 MIN)

  1. Use Intext to require that the text on the page includes your search terms, and that they are not just part of a URL, or in another place that does not help you
  2. Use Intext to find certain words specifically in the text of all the web pages it offers you
  3. Use Intext to get rid of results based on anchor text by requiring that your key words be in the text itself of the pages Google finds for you
  4. Use Intext to require that multiple search terms fall in either the URL or in the title of a page

Lesson #15 Alternate Query Type—Info Links will develop the skills to: (11 MIN)

  1. Use Info Link when you want an overview of how well connected a site is to the rest of the web
  2. Use Info Link to get an informative snapshot with the links on Google's information page
  3. Use Info Link to find certain types of information on a particular web site, including who is linking to it, what the pages contained in the website are, and where it is referred to by name on other pages
  4. Use Info Link to obtain an overview of any website directly from Google's web search box
  5. Use Info Link if you already know the site you want to compare, you can search for analogous sites directly from the search box with
  6. Use Info Link to find information on which sites are linking to a particular site on both the information page and by running a direct search from the regular Google search box

Lesson #16 Advanced Operator—Date Range will develop the skills to: (12 MIN)

  1. Use Date Range searches to eliminate old sites that clutter up your search results
  2. Use Date Ranges in the Advanced Search box to search pre set time periods
  3. Use Date Ranges in a totally flexible manner with any prior date range you set
  4. Use Date Range to search between any two dates in the past

Lesson # 17 Advanced Search Page will develop the skills to: (9 MIN)

  1. Use the Advance Search Page to set the language of your results
  2. Use the Advance Search Page to determine the usage rights of your search
  3. Use the Advance Search Page to search with an exact Phrase , Language or Region
  4. Use the Advance Search Page to perform a SafeSearch
  5. Use the Advance Search Page to set the number of results to display per page
  6. Use the Advance Search Page for topic-specific search interfaces, which are written to help you search for subjects like US Government, specific universities, and Apple Macintosh.

Lesson #18 Query Modifier—Filtering Results will develop the skills to: (12 MIN)

  1. Use the Filtering capabilities to show you 50 results on a page, but to start displaying at the 900th-ranked result
  2. Use Filtering capabilities to apply automatic filters to your search results to edit your URL to include omitted results
  3. Use Filtering capabilities to quickly set safe filters
  4. Use Filters when searching images to filter for only pictures of people

Lesson # 19 Restrict Search—Geographic will develop the skills to: (10 MIN)

  1. Use Geographic capabilities to search for international data or something quite local
  2. Use Geographic capabilities to find local business information by zip code or place name, combined with the type of business you need
  3. Use Geographic capabilities to empower your search terms to only search web sites from specific countries

Lesson # 20 Specialized Information Search—Directories will develop the skills to: (8 MIN)

  1. Use Google Directory to gain access to several million organized links selected by subject experts to create high-quality, targeted browsing
  2. Use Google Directory when you need a general overview of a topic, or just are tired of results littered with advertising, or poor-quality hits, the directory is the answer for you
  3. Use Google Directory to search the contents of the Google Directory, allowing you to draw off of vetted links, and also allows you to find one site that matches your needs, and follow the category link up to a list of appropriate links
